Norethindrone

1.  Functional groups: i. Ketone ii. Alkene iii. Alkyne iv. Alcohol 

2. Uses: i. Birth control ii. To treat menstrual disorders, endometriosis, or abnormal vaginal bleeding caused by a hormone imbalance 

3.  Misuses: i. Don’t use if you have breast cancer, liver disease, or if you are pregnant ii. Missing a pill can make the drug ineffective and cause side effects 

4. Mechanism: i. Progestins diffuse freely into target cells and bind to the progesterone receptor, slow the frequency of release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone from the hypothalamus and blunt the pre-ovulatory LH surge 

5. Side effects: i. Irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting, headache, breast pain or swelling, stomach pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, depressed mood, trouble sleeping, weight gain, vaginal itching, or discharge
